The Living End, Gregg Araki s acclaimed postmodern story of l amour fou explores the sexual and fatally romantic consequences of gay male attraction in the 90s, propelled by a hardcore-industrial soundtrack. The film focuses on the relationship between a pair of young outcasts Luke the rootless hustler, and Jon, a freelance writer whose life and stability are devastated when he finds out he s HIV positive. With literally nothing to lose, they set off on the lam into the desolate, quasi-surrealistic American Wasteland. Strand Releasing and Fortissimo Films, along with Gregg Araki, have completely remastered the film for this screening, cleaning up the original 16 mm print and transferring it to HD, recolor-timing it, and totally remixing the soundtrack, thus enhancing the film s soul, weight and significance of its messages. In giving a vibrant voice to the speechless and disenfranchised, The Living End is a classic of the Queer New Wave genre.
